Objectives of Wicklow Rapid response

Promoting life, reducing suffering and promoting patient wellbeing in the community. This is achieved by providing essential life saving equipment to pre-hospital practitioners so they may respond to emergencies while off-duty. EMTs, Paramedics, Advanced Paramedics and Suitably trained Doctors have the skills and knowledge, but when off-duty lack the access the potentially life saving equipment, such as Automated External Defibrillators and Advanced Airway equipment.

Current activities:

Wicklow Rapid Response provides a volunteer led pre-hospital emergency care service.

We are dispatched by the National Ambulance Service to the most seriously ill and injured patients.

Getting qualified practitioners to the patient in a timely manner so they can commence treatment can be the difference in saving a patient's life. Our volunteer practitioners respond to a wide variety of emergencies which includes, Cardiac Arrest, Cardiac Chest Pain, Choking, Strokes and Road Traffic Collisions.

Receiving treatment early can significantly impact the patient's overall outcome as well as potentially reduce their stay in hospital.

Wicklow Rapid Response over the last number of years have been increasing the number of practitioners that are actively responding in their own time within their communities, currently we support 30 volunteer practitioners, in time as more funding for equipment becomes available, we will be expanding our network of volunteer practitioners.

This shift towards supporting increased numbers of highly trained practitioners to provide care within their community reduces the time it takes to provide the additional links within the chain of survival and in turn increase the chances of surviving a cardiac arrest.

These practitioners may also respond to a number of other life-threatening incidents, such as cardiac chest pain, farm accidents, choking, strokes and road traffic collisions.
